In a battle of the competition’s undefeated teams, the Pigeons got on top through the mid-court to register an impressive 46-35 victory at J.C. Lowe Oval.
Holly Milner and Jaclyn Flanagan were superb for the Pigeons, who shot clear in the second half after leading by two goals at the main break.
With Hannah Symes behind her, Milner’s ability to intercept was a highlight of Yarrawonga’s victory.
Emily Browne and Sarah Meredith gave their all for the Panthers, who were made to pay dearly for a series of turnovers.
Meredith spent one quarter opposed to Pigeons shooter Bridget Cassar, who shot 25 goals, but spent the rest of the match in goal defence.
Attacking duo Sarah Senini and Skye Hillier made the most of limited opportunities to shoot 15 goals each for the Panthers.
Lavington co-coach Tamara Mathews said the Panthers would take plenty of lessons from the defeat to the competition pace-setters.
“We didn’t make the most of our opportunities,” she said.
“We had plenty of the ball going into attack but we just couldn’t get it to our shooters, we didn’t give them enough of the ball.
“If you turn it over, Yarrawonga make you pay.
“We’re disappointed with the loss but Yarrawonga are the benchmark and it was a good test for us to see where we’re at.
“There was aspects of the game we didn’t do well and that were in our control so will go away and focus on getting those things right.”
Mathews said the Panthers were looking forward to taking on fourth-placed Wangaratta Rovers after the interleague bye.
The Hawks celebrated Stacey Emms’ 200th match for the club in style with a 13-goal victory over Albury at W.J. Findlay Oval.
Ainslee Dowling and Jenna McLeod were outstanding for the Rovers with Samantha Kreltszheim shooting 28 goals in attack in the 50-37 win.
Alison Leech and Brooke Pryse turned in strong performances as Wodonga Raiders consigned Myrtleford to its eighth straight defeat at McNamara Reserve.
Corowa-Rutherglen was made to pay for a slow start against Wangaratta at John Foord Oval, going down to the Pies 58-45.
