The investment was announced on Monday morning by company XLam which specialises in cross laminated timber which is used in building construction.
XLam chief executive Gary Caulfield said 54 jobs would be created as a result of the factory deal with 30 direct and 24 indirect.
The company is yet to decide whether it will base the factory in Albury or Wodonga.
However, its timeframe for the project involves the building of the plant beginning next month with an aim of being operational by June 2017.
“By building this facility in Albury Wodonga we’ll be in easy reach of Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra via the road and rail networks, and from their Australia wide," Mr Caulfield said.
“We’re eager to work with the Albury-Wodonga communities to build an incredible facility, and become an asset to the region."
It is planned to produced 60,000 cubic metres per year.
XLam, which is a majority Australian-owned company, has previously imported cross laminated timber from a New Zealand factory.
