I used to go into the pound before we were able to do full time volunteering and we had five minutes to chose a dog. The pens were hosed with a high pressure hose in the middle of winter and the floors were left wet so these dogs were left on freezing cold wet floors.
Since we have been there, they get warm bedding, they get fed properly and we give them bones on a regular basis. The animals interact with people everyday and the ones that have issues we work on. We have spent money on removing lumps, amputations, broken necks, removal of teeth and numerous parvo dogs. We have had to put down dogs that have been dumped at the pound and are beyond treatment. We have had lots of puppies born in care because the pregnant mum has been abandoned.
The council never spent a cent on these animals and if we weren't there, they would have either died in the pound or been pets. To take the pound over to Albury is an insult to Wodonga dog rescue and the community. We have had to de-sex, microchip, register and vac every animal that leaves the pound. Minimum cost to Wodonga dog rescue is $287.50 and maximum $360 for dogs, cats are $186.40 and max $234.00.
In NSW it is not compulsory to de-sex a dog before it is re-homed. They go to homes go wandering, get pregnant and the cycle starts all over again. The community needs to stop this happening as there will be so many animals that will die for no reason.

Individual votes count
CAN I assure Brian Mitchell of Wodonga (The Border Mail letters, 24/5) that my announcement that I will stand for Albury Council again and that I will have a team is not “a blatant attempt to control local councils by people that aren’t prepared to stand on their own two feet for consideration.”
The need for a team comes about because of the voting system in NSW local government elections. If one stands as an individual without a team voters must vote for at least five candidates and we know that just does not happen except for a small percentage of voters.
With a team people only have to put a vote in one box. Rest assured that when voting for Thurley no other person in the group will be elected and so people will be voting for what I stand for.
In the past, councillors Gould and Glachan have received enough votes so that the second person on their team has also been elected but no other candidate has done so. I am sure that I will not get my number two elected.

Postage a debacle
I recently bought a car part from the US, ordered it by parcel post, delivered within a week. I checked it on arrival at Culcairn and resent it by Australia Post to Melbourne.
However, Australia Post decided it needed a few more miles under its belt so sent it back to Sydney then to Melbourne. A total of three times I tracked it down in Sydney. After being told the parcel had not yet arrived at my brothers place, I rang Australia Post in who informed me they had deemed the parcel lost from Thomastown and will give me my postage cost back.
The parcel got here from the USA no problem but after sending it on a 6000km trip up and down the Hume Freeway they lost it.
