Dr Wass died on Monday aged 62.

She operated from her practice Debbie Wass Ultrasound Clinic in West Albury after moving from rooms in Vermont Street, Wodonga, less than a decade ago.

Deborah Margarette Wass was the only specialist in her sub-field practising outside of the capital cities.

Medical colleagues have said her contribution to the Border was massive and it was a privilege to have that degree of talent in regional Australia.

Albury-Wodonga Health director of obstetrics and gynaecology Simon Craig said the medical community of Albury-Wodonga and surrounding regions were mourning the loss of Dr Wass.

“We have been enriched by her presence for over 20 years,” Dr Craig said.

“Debbie was an obstetrician and gynaecologist who sub-specialised in obstetric ultrasound. As such, she was one of the most highly qualified people in Australia and the only specialist of her type outside a capital city.

“We were lucky enough to have her after she settled here due to a love of the country and her interest in horse breeding.

“The quality of her work was outstanding, particularly in prenatal diagnosis; this allowed accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment for many 'at risk' babies.

“Debbie exhibited great knowledge, skill, professionalism and a cutting, dry wit.

“She cared for all patients with honesty and compassion.

“Debbie will be desperately missed by her colleagues and friends but also by the many families in the region who have benefited from her humanity and wisdom."

Passionate about the thoroughbred industry, Dr Wass was a horse breeder based at Gerogery West.

Her mother was a Sydney horse trainer.

Social media flooded with tributes from Border parents who have benefited from her ultrasound expertise.

Sydney nephew Jock Davidson posted about the death of his beloved aunt.

“Here's to a wonderful woman that was always there for me and my family. A great friend, doctor and lover of all things horse racing. Her sense of humour was as dry as a desert and I loved it.”

Funeral details have yet to be released.
