The speakers who received the greatest cheers after speaking were Labor’s Eric Kerr and the Greens’ candidate Jenny O’Connor.
Eric contradicted Labor’s policy on refugees but I guess if he is elected he can take up this minor point with Bill Shorten. Eric explained that he was a 22-year-old part time uni student and provided his experiences as a year 12 student. He didn’t mention that he has never had a full time job, nor would I believe ever had paid income tax as he would be below the income tax threshold.
He stated tertiary education should be completely free. I would argue that many people are working hard and paying taxes for education and it is only fair that students pay back half the cost of their degree when they receive a sufficient income to help keep a system going strong. Everyone must be a contributor when they can.
A few years ago Jenny O’Connor publicly stated that she is in favour of death duties as she believes “the rich can afford to pay more tax”. I believe the moderator did not want to hear my question for Cathy McGowan: “Cathy, if you are successful in being re-elected is there any possibility that the dysfunction in government in Australia that has occurred in recent years because of independents in the Senate and the House of Representatives could reoccur with the resultant instability and indecisiveness being bad for Australia?”

A dog day for our city
THIS time the council got it wrong. In a major, major way.
How can they even think of closing the Wodonga Dog Rescue? We need to have it here in Wodonga not Albury.
What are we paying pet registration for? What does the council want? The Wodonga Dog Rescue is run by volunteers and they do a great job. I for one would not mind paying a little extra for my pet registration to keep it going. We must keep it going and I am sure they can find the money if they really tried.
Let us go forward not backwards.

Apologies to the Coalition
IF there are any apologies to be handed out (The Border Mail, May 25), perhaps Ken Jasper might consider apologising to the loyal, hard-working volunteers of the Liberal and National Parties (the Coalition), for working to unseat a Coalition MP in 2013.
It still baffles me that the National Party didn’t expel him for this act of treachery and it baffles me more that the Nationals appear to be accepting him back into the fold.
Mr Jasper might also consider apologising to the people of Indi for being instrumental in consigning us to three wasted years of ineffective representation in the national parliament.

A couplet for Corboy
MARTY, what a man, what a bloke, he is standing for your vote, he’s not sexist, what he said and what he spoke, people need a man, for whom to vote, yes Mr Corboy, not a boy a virile bloke, a real man, does he drink? Does he smoke?
The 1950s Nationals looking for your vote, good on ya Marty you’re their bloke, what did he say, when he spoke, oh yes, just a joke.
