The siege began at 3.15pm on Rowan Street when police attended a 45-year-old's home, after his mental health treatment order had been revoked.
Wangaratta police, the dog squad and the critical incident response team, from Melbourne, negotiated with the man, who threatened to self-harm using a knife.
He was eventually arrested and sustained minor injuries after he was bitten by a police dog.
Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Pursell said officers did a good job diffusing the situation.
“The way police dealt with it was to minimise injury to all our members through our harm policy,” he said.
The man was taken to Wangaratta Hospital where he will receive ongoing treatment.
