A BENALLA artist has been chosen as a finalist for best newcomer in a world-renowned design competition featuring works from Australia and New Zealand.

Heather Chapman, who recently founded a greeting card business, said one of her hand-drawn creations was shortlisted in the Etsy Design Awards.
“All my designs and illustrations come directly from my experiences and my life,” she said.
“It’s a way to share things that happen in rural or city life – I split my time between Benalla and Melbourne.”
Her card poked fun at how leaving a farm gate open could be considered a cardinal sin.
“I grew up on a farm and I was just thinking of things that make me laugh or smile,” Ms Chapman said.
“If you bog a motorbike it’s considered just another day on the farm, but the biggest no-no for me when I was growing up was leaving the gate open.”
Ms Chapman was also selected for the community choice award by Etsy, which is an online marketplace for handmade goods.
Voting for the community award closes June 7 and winners will be announced on June 20.
