But Tim Quilty will not get heavily involved in Indi-specific issues during the election campaign.
The Wodonga accountant has announced he will stand for the Liberal Democrats, becoming the eighth candidate.
“Generally I’m pushing for issues nationally for the party,” Mr Quilty said.
He was campaigning on a platform to free the economy from government restrictions and heavy taxes.
“The current independent MP and the major party challengers are all engaged in a giant vote buying spending spree,” Mr Quilty said.
“We will fight the attacks on law abiding firearms owners, push back the wowsers telling us how we are allowed to enjoy ourselves and oppose the increase in tobacco excise and ever increasing restrictions on where people are allowed to smoke.”
He said since moving to the electorate in 2013, he noticed the same level of local government intervention from Wodonga Council.
“The way they spend money is incredible, by hiking up rates,” he said.
The July election will be the first time a Liberal Democrats member has stood for Indi.
Mr Quilty stood for the party in past federal elections in Riverina in 2010 and in Eden-Monaro in 2004 and 2007.
