Coached by Albury High’s Richard Leahy, the region started with a 5.6 (36) to 1.2 (8) win over Sydney.
Austin Shepherd, Cameron Wilson, Jay Burr-Hillary, Rhys Mitsch and Jack Sexton played well in the tough conditions for the victors.
Riverina Murray backed up against Northern NSW and went down 7.7 (49) to 3.3 (21).
Wilson, Mitsch, Shepherd, Sexton and Tobi Gilmour were in the best players.
Northern NSW finished on top of pool A on percentage.
CCC South finished day one on top of pool A after defeating CIS by three points and South Coast by 122 points.
Adam Martin and Rhys Mooney performed strongly.
After losing to CCC South, CIS bounced back with a 97-point victory over South Coast.
Eddy Ziebarth and Henry Bouffler played well.
Riverina South West finished on top in pool B with Kooringal’s Connor Willis in the thick of the action.
Matches will continue at Lavington Oval and Urana Road Oval on Wednesday with finals scheduled for Thursday.
CIS took out last year’s championship with Riverina South West runner-up and Riverina Murray third.
At the end of the carnival selectors will name a 25-player team to represent NSW in the SSA Secondary AFL Championships at Maroochydore on July 30.
