Poor discipline and a strong breeze favouring the Hoppers in the first quarter put the Hawks behind the eight ball in the first quarter.
Down six goals to two at quarter time, the Hawks steadied the ship and took a 15-point lead into the main break.
They didn't look back from there, holding Tallangatta at arms length in the second half to bank a 25-point win.
“It was a must-win game for both clubs, so we're really happy to come away with the points,” Turner said.
“They were heading to the scoring end first, but we didn't help ourselves by giving away a few 50-metre penalties.
“We knew they would score in the second half, we had to make it as hard as we could.
“There's a bit of a rivalry forming there, it's good to beat a good team at home.”
