The resident, in his 20s, and a woman were at the Beechworth Road home during the incident before 6pm Saturday.
Wodonga CFA station officer David Brown said the pair had been heating oil on the stove to cook the dim sims in.
He believed inattention led to the pot catching alight.
Firefighters from Wodonga and Wodonga West responded to the incident, but the fire was out by the time they arrived.
“In the process of lifting pot off the stove and taking it outside - which we don’t recommend doing – some of that boiling hot oil spilled over his legs and feet,” Mr Brown said.
“He suffered significant burns and was transported to Albury hospital by ambulance.
“I reckon he would be regretting every second of it now, he'll be in a world of pain today.
“We are talking about a guy who won’t be able to put shoes on because of blistering.”
There was no fire damage to the home as a result of the incident.
Mr Brown said it was a very real reminder of how important it could be to have a fire blanket set up in the kitchen.
He said people should also be vigilant and never leave cooking unattended.
“People should have their kitchen properly set up so they have a fire blanket,” Mr Brown said.
“In this instance, they could have put the blanket over top of the pot and put out the flames, then we can come along and deal with it from there.
“That’s the best advice.
“That’s what I do at home and what we do at the station.”
