But these blokes are not your average set of car washers – they have carved out a business niche in spite of their mild intellectual disabilities.
With the guidance of their disability support organisation, the Mercy Centre Lavington, the men now brighten vehicles every Tuesday and Friday.
"It started off as a project to wash cars for staff at the Mercy Centre," their co-ordinator Geoff Bartel said.
"Then they enrolled in a course at Wodonga TAFE and they got involved with the idea of having a business and came up with the name Spongies Car Wash.
"They are really learning to work in a workplace with all the WHS stuff and they're getting a lot of self-confidence out of it."
They have been rotating between the Mercy Centre, Wodonga TAFE and the Albury Wodonga Aboriginal Health Service, where they were on Tuesday brightening six cars including Teisha Maksymow's sedan.
"I think that more local businesses should take these guys on, give them the opportunity to do something they love, and give back to the community," the reception supervisor said.
For the participants who are aged 21 to 56, Spongies Car Wash has offered new skills and a big morale boost.
"It gives you something to do and to have a purpose in life," Paul Cahoon said.
Colleague Shaune Cashion was equally passionate but has some pet car marques.
"I like washing the windscreens and the mirrors and the lights and I like vacuuming," Mr Cashion said.
"I only like washing Toyotas and Holdens because they're my favourite cars."
Daniel Quinn said the work had increased harmony among the group.
"It's more happy and it's good to wear the uniform and be professional car washers," Mr Quinn said.
Mr Bartel said the men had done gardening work at the Mercy Centre, but the car washing was their first "real taste of getting out in the community and doing something".
Wodonga firm Golding's Car Cleaning has given the men some training.
Mr Bartel is keen to expand and those with work can ring Nancy Gray at the Mercy on (02) 6043 3500.
