Indi Labor identity Zuvele Leschen has taken the husband of Liberal candidate, Sophie Mirabella, to task for defying an order from the CFA chief officer Joe Buffone not to wear uniform for political gain.
The Tarrawingee brigade volunteer wore his CFA cap at the Wodonga and Wangaratta pre-poll centres this week, but hit back at Labor for using similar political motives when Ambulance Victoria employees helped the party win the 2014 state election.
Mr Mirabella also wore a Liberal Party t-shirt, but denied he was handing out how-to-vote cards for his wife.
‘This is all about politics,” he said.
"Daniel Andrews is the Premier, in part, because a bunch of paid ambulance drivers and fire-fighters used taxpayer-funded vehicles to help him get elected in 2014.
"If I didn't respect the CFA logo I wouldn't wear it and for anybody in the Labor Party to make such a suggestion is breath-taking in its hypocrisy.
"If the chief officer wants to dock my pay or sack me, he can feel free.
"I wore the cap because I am deeply concerned about the CFA, but I also know Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberal Party have promised to do something about it..
"Irrespective of being Sophie's husband, I would do it anyway."
In a media statement, Ms Leschen said Mr Mirabella had defied a directive not to wear CFA uniform for political gain.
"This action is clearly in breach of the chief fire officer’s directive and shows disrespect for the uniform," she said.
"Mr Mirabella’s background as an army officer means he should understand the importance of such directives."
Mr Mirabella said: “As a career army officer, I know more than Zuvele will ever know about orders and directives”.
He has handed over a video taken at Wodonga pre-poll centre of a man claiming to also be a CFA volunteer abusing him for wearing a CFA cap.
He alleged the man, who The Border Mail has attempted to contact for comment, had taken photos of him earlier.
"The video speaks for itself," Mr Mirabella said.
Indi MP Cathy McGowan has been a CFA member for more than 15 years, but has not used her involvement with the organisation for political gain in the campaign.
“I understand how CFA volunteers play a fundamental role in keeping our communities safe,” she said.
“CFA volunteers have my support and legislation presented to federal parliament post-election will have my backing if the Bill addresses the concerns of CFA volunteers.”
Mr Mirabella said he was surprised Ms McGowan had not made more of the CFA issue.
"Any fair dinkum CFA volunteer would be wearing the CFA logo at every opportunity at present,” he said.
"I am a CFA volunteer because I am a farmer and one day I am going to need a truck at my place.
"CFA volunteers, in my experience, spend as much, if not more, time defending communities other than their own.
"Daniel Andrews and his government have already driven a wedge between volunteers and paid fire-fighters.
“More importantly they risk destroying a culture which serves the entire state of Victoria.”
