Wangaratta Asylum Seeker Proactive Support will hold an hour-long vigil from 4pm Friday, on the corner of Ford and Murphy streets.
The group plans to send a message to passing cars and the prevailing government the issue would not go away.
The group also posed a series of questions to the Indi candidates about what it called the “mistreatment and abuse” of vulnerable asylum seekers.
Cathy McGowan, Labor’s Eric Kerr and Greens candidate Jenny O’Connor replied.
“The behaviour of this government has shamed our nation on the international stage,” Ms O’Connor said.
“As an Australian, I am truly appalled and deeply ashamed that the government of my country could treat people with the inhumanity and cruelty that has been the hallmark of nations we have ourselves condemned for their abuse of human rights.”
