The rain started to bucket down in the second half but the Boomers held firm for a stirring 2-0 win.
The win caused a flood of movement on the AWFA table.
It was a tough game, the rain started coming down and they weren't exactly ideal conditions for football but we got the job done.
- Andrew Grove
Boomers are now third on the ladder on goals, and on equal points Twin City and the fourth placed Albury United.
Wangaratta have fallen below Melrose into seventh, while Myrtleford are now fifth.
Pieter Noordewier and Nathan Stojanov did the damage for Boomers, leaving coach Andrew Grove understandably pleased.
“It's a good win to get on the road,” he said.
“It was a tough game, the rain started coming down and they weren't exactly ideal conditions for football but we got the job done,” he said.
Grove was pleased with the improvements his side had made on the defensive end throughout the second half of the year.
“We were solid down back all afternoon, we held them out,” he said.
“Wangaratta were attacking hard, particularly in the second half.
“They weren't quite able to generate too many chances from it.
“To not concede against a team like Wangaratta is really good to see.
“We've always been dangerous up front, but we're starting to be really solid down back as well.”
Cobram look to be on the brink of claiming the league championship after their 8-1 win over Wodonga Diamonds, but Grove said the league was too close too call at the moment.
“We've got a lot of work to do if we're going to do it, but we;re still in the mix for the championship,” he said.
“If teams keep knocking each other off the way they are at the moment anything could happen.
“If you're not playing well on the day at the moment you'll get beaten.
“I think it's a bit closer this season than it has been in the last couple of years, and even those seasons have been pretty tight.
“Even teams like Melrose in seventh are very dangerous.”
Grove's suggestion proved to be on the money this week, as Melrose got up 3-1 over Myrtleford.
A brace from Evan Rawluk ensured the home side took the points.
In other matches, Wodonga Diamonds came back to Earth with an 8-1 loss to Cobram after winning two in a row in the previous fortnight.
Four goals for Bill Puckett and two to Josh Dutton-Black had the visitors well and truly on top.
A late Caleb Martin winner helped Albury United defeat Albury City, who looked to have regained form after being struck by injuries.
St Pats were too good for Wodonga Heart, winning 6-2, while Twin City outclassed Hotspurs 5-0.
