Trees grow and almost obliterate them. For instance, if you come east onto the Hume Highway, you can’t even read the sign that says Gundagai.

I am trusting that the publication of this letter will bring about some results.

Jonathan Ayres’ letter “Don’t look back” (The Border Mail, July 16) hits the mark and sets direction for Corowa as well. 

The letter is what Corowa should be aiming at the target market of four million people only three hours away, and highlights what city people want in regions – and it is all here if captured and not ignored as it currently is. 

The editorial also states “Tourism provides a boost” and it is time it got support. Let’s hope locals hear  and read other opinions because our current path is one that is achieving nothing and taking us backwards fast . 

The arctic blast that hit Victoria last week has had me concerned about how people are keeping warm.

When temperatures drop some people turn to any means to warm themselves. As we’ve seen in the past, this can involve using gas appliances in unsafe ways.

Energy Safe Victoria wants to remind people that gas appliances attached to portable gas cylinders should never be used indoors or in confined spaces.

Gas heaters and appliances require plenty of ventilation to operate safely and should only be used according to manufacturer’s instructions.

The golden rule is if an appliance is attached to a portable gas bottle, don’t bring it inside. Without proper ventilation, CO can build up and quickly reach fatal levels.

CO is a silent killer that is colourless, odourless and tasteless. It can leak from faulty, unserviced gas heaters or accumulate if there is insufficient ventilation. It can cause death or chronic poisoning that is indicated by flu-like symptoms including lethargy, nausea or headaches.

Gas heaters including wall units, decorative fireplaces, space heaters and central heating units should be serviced a minimum of every two years by a registered gas fitter. Find a gas fitter in your local area and before booking a service, check that they are registered and have the proper equipment to test for CO. It could save your life.

I would like to say that it was extremely disappointing that there were so few polling booths around Wodonga on election day.

People were waiting in long queues in the cold and wet for up to an hour or more. They then had to contend with ballot papers of enormous length. I would not be surprised if some people retaliated by not casting their votes properly. Any wonder then that more and more people will do postal votes or early voting to avoid these events in the future.

Black Range Pony Club is a small pony club located in Thurgoona. We are holding our annual Marg Andrew Memorial Showjump day on August 20 and first ever Black Range Challenge day on August 21. The competition is open to members of any pony club, competitors are aged 2 to 25 years. We have competitors travel from as far as Tumut and Jingellic to compete.

At our showjump day we run a teams event for the Marg Andrew Memorial Shield, which is presented to the team with the highest point score overall. Marg passed away while she was the secretary of our club many years ago. Entries close August 9.
