Store manager Gabbie Piazza was left with a disheartening clean-up after the supermarket was broken into about 3am Monday.
“It’s disappointing – we do all this hard work and this happens … it’s such a major part of the community,” she said.
“There’s quite a bit of damage out the back.”
Wangaratta Detective Leading Senior Constable Jason Bray said police didn’t know how many people were involved in the crime.
“When inside, it looks like their intent has been to get into a safe in an office area,” he said.
“They gave it a good try but were unsuccessful, so nothing else was stolen.
“There was considerable damage caused to the inside of the building and walls.”
Detective Leading Senior Constable Bray said there was no CCTV footage of the incident.
“The method they used for gaining entrance meant there was no footage available to us, but we are in the process of canvasing the area,” he said.
“An alarm was set off, so if anyone was going about their employment and may have information they can contact Crime Stoppers (on 1800 333 000) or Wangaratta criminal investigation unit.”
