Adam Troy Groves was at the wheel of a high-performance Mercedes Benz that had been reported stolen from a Melbourne car hire business.
This was one of three matters over which Groves is awaiting sentence, though he has not been charged with the theft of the Mercedes.
The incidents stretch back to 2013, when Groves, now 35, stole a utility during a supposed test drive.
Groves has pleaded guilty to a range of charges including several counts of drive while disqualified, take and drive convenience without consent of the owner, dishonestly obtain property by deception, receiving outside NSW and police pursuit (not stop) drive at speed.
Albury Local Court magistrate Tony Murray ordered a pre-sentence report on three sets of charges.
It was just before 11.30am on April 15, 2014, when the Mercedes AMG C63 – with Queensland number plates registered to a Toyota Yaris – was seen heading north in Wagga Road.
Police began a pursuit that led to Groves accelerating “harshly” to about 100km/h before turning right into Vickers Road, cutting off two vehicles in the process.
Ten minutes later someone was crossing David Street outside Myer Centrepoint when Groves came past at high speed, narrowly missing the person who police said had to take “evasive action to avoid being hit”.
In another incident, a man advertised his SS Commodore utility around June 20, 2013.
On the 29th, Groves organised a test drive under the name of “Dale”, meeting the victim outside Hume Public School in Lavington.
The victim drove the car around North Albury then, when they got to Vickers Road, said Groves could drive, provided the seller was in the passenger seat.
When the victim got out, Groves locked the ute and drove away.
The ute and the Mercedes have not been recovered.
Groves remains in custody, bail refused, and will be sentenced on August 25.
