The Roar hold a six-point lead over the Wanderers with five rounds left to play.
Third-placed Myrtleford are even further behind, trailing by the league front-runners by 10 points.
Wanderers co-coach Shaun Wilhelm said Twin City were out to consolidate second spot against Wangaratta on Sunday.
“To be perfectly honest, we're not really after the league title,” he said.
“We're more about consolidating our position now and getting ourselves ready for finals.
“Personally, it doesn't really matter who finishes in the top eight.
“Any one of the teams that do is capable of winning the Cup final.”
The Wanderers travel to face Wangaratta this Sunday.
The Red Devils are also looking to consolidate their position in the top eight after losing two of their last four games.
Star striker Adam Burchell, who has battled a quad injury for most of the season, said there was a different attitude towards the league championship in Australia, compared to his native England.
“Over here it's all about the grand final,” he said.
“You might as well hand the league to Cobram, it's done and dusted.
“We're just focusing on finals.”
In other games this weekend, Myrtleford will look to have an impact on the outcome of the league championship when they face Cobram.
Albury City host Wodonga Heart, while Hotspurs will take on Albury United.
Boomers host Melrose, while Melrose and St Pats battle it out in round two of the Melda Chater Shield.
