The dual premiership defender has made a seamless transition into the forward line for the Pigeons, kicking 18 goals in the past four matches.
Yarrawonga co-coach Drew Barnes said Lawless brought an extra dimension to the Pigeons’ forward line in much the same way “The Package” Jake Stringer does at the Western Bulldogs.
“He gives us that excitement but his ability to take a grab and create a contest has been really beneficial,” he said.
“His ability to use his speed and pressure around the forward line has been very pleasing. He’s an excitement package.”
Lawless will be a key player for the Pigeons against Myrtleford at McNamara Reserve on Saturday with Brad O’Connor sidelined through suspension.
The Saints took it right up to the Pigeons when the sides met at J.C. Lowe Oval earlier in the season, leading for the first three quarters before being over-run in the final term.
Myrtleford will be without Frazer Dale (ankle) and Brady Sharp (knee) but the Pigeons have a big gun of their own on the injured list in Craig Ednie (calf).
Barnes is expecting a fierce contest from the Saints, who need to win to maintain their position in the top five.
“They’ve found some very good over the last five or six weeks,” he said.
“Looking at some of their vision, when they’ve been able to put their best side on the park, their best football has been very competitive.
“It seems a very balanced side, they’ve been able to fill gaps that in previous years they might have been missing.
“They’ve done some very good recruiting.”
