With a Shaun Mannagh shot set to put the Hoppers up by a point, Van Berlo reeled in his 15th mark of the day on the goal-line to secure a 6.5 (41) to 5.6 (36) win and move the Magpies inside the top five for the first time since round two.
The Dan Leslie-led Hoppers had all the play in the last quarter but a 17-point deficit at the final change proved too much.
Brad Melville’s run and carry in heavy conditions proved important for the Magpies.
