ALBURY ART GALLERY
ANCESTRAL POWER AND THE AESTHETIC
This remarkable exhibition of Arnhem Land paintings and objects from the Donald Thomson Collection is on show for the first time featuring the remarkable bark paintings collected by Australian anthropologist and ornithologist Donald Thomson in the 1930s and early 1940s - some of the oldest and rarest examples of these works in existence. The Collection features works by legendary Yolngu figure, Djapu clan leader Wonggu, and includes the first bark painting Donald Thomson collected and the brushes and palette that Wonggu used to produce it. The works are powerful examples of a rich Yolngu artistic heritage with their extraordinary combinations of bold designs, patterns, and colour. Extremely rare items include a painting that depicts an image of one of the Djan’kawu Sisters’ ancestors in human form. Ancestral Power and the Aesthetic: Arnhem Land paintings and objects from the Donald Thomson Collection is a Museum Victoria touring exhibition. Openings 6pm Friday, October 5. Enjoy a conversation with the curator, Lindy Allen, at 10.30am, Saturday, October 6.
Until November 18

THE WAY OF THE SHOGUN
The spectacular works of Japan’s Ukiyo-e artists are featured in this amazing exhibition from the Latrobe Regional Gallery’s permanent collection of Asian art. Emerging in Tokyo in the 17th century, Ukiyo-e is a form of woodblock print making that captured the handsome actors of the Kabuki theatre, landscapes and scenes from Japan’s entertainment districts.

ALBURY ART GALLERY
PORTRAYER PORTRAYS
A thought-provoking exhibition that showcases portraiture and self-portraiture from the Albury Art Gallery collection. Artists, writers and performers who are often shielded by their own artworks are portrayed in this exhibition. We can be great admirers and are often highly influenced and inspired by their work, yet we may not recognise them if we passed them in the street. Portrayer Portrays eliminates the art and politics and puts the artist right in front of us. Biographical details accompanying the portraits give us an insight into the life and career of the artist which ultimately gives us indication of their influences and what urged them to create artistic icons of modern history.
Until November 4

ARTS SPACE WODONGA
MELANCHOLIA
DELVING into the depths of depression, Melancholia, the new exhibition from The Dax Centre, explores the relationship between this misunderstood illness and its impact on creativity and the mind. Melancholia features about 80 artworks drawn from the world-renowned Cunningham Dax Collection. Artists involved in the exhibition include Konrad Winkler, Joan Rodriquez, NEG, Donna Lawrence, Julie Goodwin, Daniel Richards and Laura Gronn. The Dax Centre curator Charlotte Christie describes Melancholia as an “honest and confronting depiction of an often romanticised concept”. “The exhibition deals with depression and its effects on people’s minds and creativity in a way that is both challenging and surprising, and the works chart many of the artists’ journeys through depression and recovery,” she says. The act of creating the artworks has been therapeutic for several of the artists. As one artist notes: It was by shifting my creative process to making that I found I didn’t sink but instead floated along the surface. I found a big difference between the contemplation of melancholia and the bleakness of depression…It is this positivity that remains key to my enjoyment of this art-making process and the natural inclination to make when falling into a melancholic state. Melancholia is on exhibition at Arts Space Wodonga now to Saturday, November 3. The show will be officially opened by Ms Christie tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10.30am. There will also be a community forum on mental health later that evening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
The Dax Centre staff will provide free guided tours of the exhibition, using the creative works exhibited to help build understanding of mental illness and mental health, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm on Thursday, October 18. Bookings essential: Phione Jennifer Wright, co-ordinator of Arts Space Wodonga, on 0478 308 595 or (02) 6022 9600
