Rotary president elect Rob Stocker says the ARIA-winning act is a perfect fit after a successful fundraiser last year.
“Rotary has supported Wewak for quite a number of years and, last year, we were looking at ways to increase the funding that we provided,” he says.
“My wife and I had heard The Idea of North a number of times.
“Part of their performance is they take a choir and provide a choral workshop to all-comers with the idea to perform with them during the concert.”
The group’s name is taken from an old radio show in the 1960s hosted by Canadian pianist Glenn Gould.
The Idea of North soprano Sally Cameron says she’s excited about coming to the Border.
“Because it’s all ages, the workshop will basically involve teaching songs and having a bit of fun,” she says.
“We always like to show people what we do in our rehearsals and onstage and our singing techniques that we use for ensemble.
“We’ll try to tailor it to make sure no matter what level of ability people are at they can get something out of it. It’s very relaxed and friendly.
“We don’t make anyone sing by themselves unless they want that.”
Ms Cameron is hoping the song they will teach in the workshop in the afternoon will be performed later that night at the concert.
“That's what happened last year when we ran the same program,” she tells The Border Mail.
“We got everyone up on stage that had been at the workshop, and it was really fun to perform it as a community choir.”
Last year Rotary raised just under $6000 and this year it was hoping to raise considerably more to provide a full year’s tuition for students at Wewak’s music ability program, which is delivered by the Murray Conservatorium.
The choral workshop will be from 4pm until 5.30pm at the Scots School chapel hall.
Performers of all ages are welcome to attend, although it’s limited to 150 people.
Up to 50 primary, secondary and university students can partake in the workshop for $10.
Ticket bookings open on Sunday.
