Doing her best for international relations at the David Jones summer launch on Wednesday night, Ms Bishop was wearing Italian atelier Valentino on the top and Britain on her feet.

Ms Bishop's shoes, by British designer Sofia Webster, were attracting a security detail of their own as media scurried after her for the name of the designer of her twinkly pumps.

Asked if they were comfortable, she replied: "No pain, no gain."

Bless Ms Bishop, who's also a fan of Christian Louboutin heels, with their signature red sole.

While she always sets a high bar, Ms Bishop wasn't the only celebrity giving the black carpet a fashion shake-down.

Tessa James

The actress must have extra-sensory perception or how else would she have chosen her perfectly weather-appropriate Burberry green dress for a summer fashion parade? With long sleeves and an exaggerated collar, James proved why she's making a name for herself as a fashion face.

Kyly Clarke

Blame it on the weather but many of the VIPs took a decidedly Melbourne cue in all-black. Actress Rachael Griffiths did her best at underdone cocktail in a v-neck shift and metallic heels, while cricket's former first lady Clarke went the high neck, thigh-high split combo – a season favourite.

Emma Lung

The pint-sized actress can be hard to spot on the red carpet because she's so tiny but we always love seeing what little surprises or flourishes she has on her outfit. At DJs, she was on point with her black asymmetrical cocktail dress and gold pointed shoes.

Carla Zampatti

The high priestess of Australian fashion not only produced one of the statement garments of the show – a zebra-print coat with "Carla" emblazoned in gold on the back – but she also stopped traffic on the red carpet in her one-shoulder ensemble.

Adam Goodes/Lance "Buddy" Franklin/Tom Derickx

We cannot pass without a mention of this trio of strapping lads. While they look mighty fine in their football kit, they know how to rock a suit. Goodes, a David Jones ambassador, may not have been walking in the show but he was front row in a sharp suit. Ditto Mr Jesinta Campbell, in Tommy Hilfiger.
