Chris Maginnity has launched his petition on Change.org, saying adding the outdoor courts would make it more affordable for people to train and play basketball.
“The general lack of availability and cost of indoor courts is a factor,” he said.
“There's more than 35 outdoor playing surfaces managed by Albury City across a range of sports.
"But there aren't any safe, well constructed outdoor basketball courts for people to use.
“It's a much-needed community facility. There's nowhere for a lot of people to play basketball in the hometown of Lauren Jackson.”
Maginnity's petition has already attracted the support of the aforementioned Albury basketball legend.
“We're hoping to get to 1000 signatures so it can potentially become an election issue,” he said.
“Our sport just doesn't have the luxury of having various options to play and train like a lot of other sports do.
“If you want to grab some of your mates and play a pick-up game, half-courts just don't cut the mustard and it's costly to hire full courts.”
Maginnity said the courts would benefit not just those who wanted to enjoy a weekend shoot-around.
“Sport can be a crime-deterrent, particularly when combined with other programs,” he said.
“The courts would become a focal point for personal interaction and and make the sport accessible to those affected by social inequity.
“Basketball can become quite elitist due to the cost involved in playing, fees are continually rising.”
The petition has so far attracted 327 signatures online.
