Competition coordinator Edwina Toohey said the second instalment of the event attracted outstanding nominations from across Australia.

“It was a really tough competition, even to make the final list,” said Ms Toohey, who is a researcher with the NSW Department of Primary Industries based at Dubbo.

“We judged them on a powerpoint presentation to a panel of six, they also had a professional development day and they were observed and critiqued throughout the day.

“It is really positive and inspiring to see their knowledge and passion.”

The final 12 were vying for top honours in their categories, and a special commendation was also presented, to Tamworth Year 10 student Charlie Shadwell.

Early career professionals aged younger than 30 section was taken out by West Australian Elise Bowen, who has set up her Sheep Data Management business in the Riverina.

The Honours/Masters/PhD category went to Steve Connaughton, who is based at Perth’s Murdoch University, while Laura Wishart, Marcus Oldham College, won the High Schools/Under graduates section.

“All of them performed so well,” Ms Toohey said.

“This is a perfect environment for them to network with key people in their chosen fields.”
