Mathew Peter Carey, 38, fronted Wodonga Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after being caught with methamphetamine and for drug driving.
He has a long criminal record and an ice addiction.
Magistrate John O’Callaghan asked what sort of person would chose drugs over their own child.
He lectured the 38-year-old, who has a young boy, about his actions and gave him a final chance to change.
The magistrate said unless Carey was a “total dickhead”, he would have to have some regard for his son.
“This would be your absolute last chance to be fair dinkum about being a father,” he said.
“It’s not all about you, you know. You’ve got a child.”
Mr O’Callaghan warned his son would live his life without a father as Carey spent time in a dark room, using drugs.
“It's a bit of a mongrel act, really,” he said.
“If you’re that kind of person, that kind of mongrel, well so be it.
“I will take you out of action (and) then, I think, you will be condemned to a very hard life.”
Carey, who was caught with ice while riding in Melrose Drive in June and Morrison Street earlier this month, became emotional while standing in the dock.
Police found evidence of drug dealing.
He was also caught drug driving twice in Wodonga in April.
Mr O’Callaghan placed Carey on a two-year community corrections order, which he is of medium to high risk of re-offending on.
He served 14 days in custody after his arrest and lost his licence for six months.
