The Demons stormed clear in the third quarter with John Anderson, Evan Nicholas, James Barlee and Jake Boyle breaking the match open.
Josh Warren-Marmo and Nathan Grimes kicked three goals each for the victors.
Federal fell down badly in attack with Darren and Matt Bradshaw and Brent Ohlin missing the clash due to injury or unavailability.
Nicholas was pleased with the way his players responded after half-time.
“We were terrible in the first quarter and probably lucky to stay with them,” Nicholas said
“I thought we looked nervous but we changed a few things up after half-time and it worked out pretty well for us.
“We got our match-ups right as Federal went in with a pretty short forward-line with the Bradshaws and Ohlin not playing.
“It was a good game to get through.”
Daniel Giddings, Mark Cole and Justin Nelson toiled hard for Federal.
Nelson could miss Saturday’s preliminary final against Cudgewa at Corryong after being reported for striking.
In the reserves, Cudgewa proved too strong for Bullioh.
