As part of national reuse, community and sustainable living movement, the annual Garage Sale Trail will be held on October 22.
Garage Sale Trail has grown from a grassroots event when it was founded in 2010 to a program supported by more than 150 councils nationally.
By organising communities around Australia to host and shop at garage sales on one big day, Wodonga Council spokesman Cr John Watson said Garage Sale Trail aimed to encourage reuse, unite communities, create awareness around the issues of illegal dumping, provide a platform for fundraising and inspire creativity.
Cr Watson said supporting Garage Sale Trail would provide residents with a fun way to declutter, meet people from the region and uncover some unusual items.
“Garage Sale Trail is a simple idea that encourages people to consider how things can be reused while also providing an opportunity to raise some money,” he said.
“The idea of passing on what you don’t want to a new home is truly a great form of sustainability.”
Touted as Australia’s “big day of good stuff”, people are encouraged to reuse, find treasure and meet their neighbours.
“For those who want to sell, you can declutter your home, make some pocket money and get involved in your whole street,” Cr Watson said.
“For those who want to buy, you can shop at multiple garage sales on the same day, find unique bargains and discover the real power or reuse.”
Registrations are now open, with the first 2500 sellers in participating council areas to register before September 25 also getting a free promotional pack with a range of posters and flyers to help maximise their sale success.
Thirteen sales within 40 kilometres of Wodonga have already registered, with 11 presented by the City of Wodonga. One sale is listed at Henty to date.
A Treasure Trail feature will allow participants to bookmark the sales they want to visit into one list.
They can use the Treasure Trail to invite friends to join them on social media, navigate around their area using the map on their phone or print a list.
Participants can look for sales in their area and click the Add to Treasure Trail button on any sale.
They will enter a few details and their email address which they can use to login to a dashboard and see all of the sales they’ve added to their Treasure Trail.
