He shared an interest in cars with owner Matt Grice.
“I’d come down for a chat to stop me going insane and get some lunch for Matt,” Mr Vicary said.
A former retail manager, Mr Vicary suffered a back injury at work three years ago.
Married to Aimee and dad to James, 8, he was originally assessed as unable to work, which led to depression.
“Being trapped at home for 15 hours a day and not being able to do anything to help was frustrating,” he said.
Rehabilitation Outcomes worked with Mr Grice, who offered his friend a mechanic apprenticeship early in 2016.
With Mr Vicary’s condition taken into account, Mr Grice said they made a good team.
Mr Vicary said it was critical to take steps towards meaningful employment.
“Even if it seems like there are no jobs out there, there will be something that suits,” he said.
“It’s absolutely fantastic to be back at work and doing something I love.”
