Rebecca McCluskey, 18, gained early entry into La Trobe University in Albury-Wodonga in 2015 in recognition of her volunteer work in the community.
Through La Trobe’s Aspire early admissions program Ms McCluskey was offered a place in the Bachelor of Arts course in 2016 at the Albury-Wodonga campus.
She volunteered at the Glenview nursing home and Rutherglen Primary School and Rutherglen High School, where she was a student.
“For me volunteering is rewarding because I know how much the people who ask for help, or who you offer help to, appreciate you being there,” Ms McCluskey said.
“It doesn’t matter the amount of effort you had to put into being there, it’s just great to know you made someone’s day a little easier.
“Plus there is the added bonus of having a great time while you are doing things – meeting new friends and spending time smiling and laughing.”
Ms McCluskey said she was thrilled to be studying her Bachelor of Arts course, majoring in history.
“It really opens your mind,” she said.
“I love being around other students who are all really excited to be learning.”
Studying part-time, McCluskey said she hoped to transfer to full-time study in future.
Vice-Chancellor John Dewar said community contribution counted at La Trobe, where they recognised students who shared their values through service that helped others.
“La Trobe University is committed to ensuring students get the jobs they want, so they can forge a successful career and make a positive difference to the world in which we live,” he said.
“The Aspire program enables us to support the efforts of these inspiring young people whose values and ambitions align with ours.”
Year 12 students are being urged to lodge their applications for study via the Aspire program before the end of August.
Successful applicants receive a La Trobe study offer in September, securing a 2017 university place before they complete their exams this year.
The university has teamed up with volunteering organisations including the Country Fire Authority, St John Ambulance and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards to give secondary school students, who are also volunteers, priority access to university study.
La Trobe University has extended its Aspire program to include applications from all potential students, not just Year 12 students.
Students can apply at www.latrobe.edu.au/Aspire or by phoning 1300 135 045.
