Hume Veterans Information Centre received the funding as part of the building excellence in support and training program, one of 144 ex-service organisations to be supported.
Chairman Kevyn Williams said although this was an annual contribution, the size of it had been “a good surprise”.
“It covers 99 per cent of our running costs and our one employee,” he said. “We’re purely a volunteer organisation that relies on grants to keep the doors open.”
Mr Williams said he believed a visit by Veterans’ Affairs Minister Dan Tehan in March had helped the centre’s cause.
“They know exactly what we do here and they want the service to continue,” he said.
“I feel it’s very important work.”
