AFLNEB region general manager John O’Donohue said the university would host coaching and club support programs and gain placement opportunities.
“We want more students studying local, which means they stay at clubs,” he said.
“There’s programs the university runs that we’ll be able to tap into and vice-versa.”
La Trobe community engagement officer Jessica Watt said 120 hours of placement with AFLNEB as part of a new work-integrated learning program would now be available to students.
“It can be anything from business students looking at accounting to history students who might look at the history of the AFL,” she said.
Mr O’Donohue said the Tallangatta and District under-17s and Ovens and King league under-18s would play for the university cups.
“It’s a target market for kids finishing school, to take up university,” he said.
“We’re really pleased to have this partnership.”
