But Deniliquin police discovered what they described as a “well-designed, homemade pistol in full working order” when they stopped a car at the Hardinge Street car wash on August 18.
The car was searched about 11.15pm and the 35-year-old passenger admitted the weapon belonged to him.
He did not hold a firearms licence and was charged with possessing the gun in a public place.
Meanwhile, Deniliquin police arrested a 27-year-old man drink-driving and speeding through the town’s residential area on August 20.
A Toyota Landcruiser was spotted speeding on Hardinge Street at 6.45pm and a pursuit began when the driver refused to stop.
He travelled along Napier and Sloane streets, up to 80km/h in a 50km/h zone, before police finally arrested him in Thomas Court.
The man returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.083.
