The issue is hardly likely to affect many farmers, however, it is the greenies who have had a short-term win. If we face, in the future, a world energy crisis, the ban will be lifted. Also, hopefully issues with fracking and underground water will be resolved. Not affected will be offshore exploration, however as the alarmists predict a new coastline in the future drilling rigs may be seen far inland. History has never been kind to banning anything.
Human headline
It has been said before but sections of the community are more concerned with animal welfare than that of their fellow man, woman and child.
- David Everist
The human headline and newly elected senator Derryn Hinch fell asleep during the opening of Parliament. Probably fair enough as it would have been as boring as his own diatribes. However the good news is that the senator, who rode into Parliament on a justice banner, is prepared to look at all aspects of the live export trade to support or refute his determination that the trade should end. One only hopes he sees the difference of exporting slaughter sheep and cattle or those sent to bolster breeding programs in other countries. He may also see that particularly cattle are young and in store condition, hardly ready for processing in domestic works. It has been said before but sections of the community are much more concerned with animal welfare than that of their fellow man, woman and child.
National Scheme
No one could argue over the benefits of electronic animal identification, however, having a sheep system in Victoria and not nationally does not make sense. Take the trade of interstate wethers and ewes into Victoria and their subsequent resale for breeding or processing. Even if they are tagged, their origin could be cloudy. A national scheme, yes.
