Several people targeted the Wangaratta District Specialist School in Appin Street on Saturday night after stealing a laptop from a neighbouring school.
Detective Sergeant Michael Dolan said a hoist on a minibus was torn off and another van had its front windscreen smashed in.
But he was particularly concerned about the attack on the chicken.
“I think it's just a reckless, inconsiderate act – it's head was ripped off its body,” he said.
“It's a cowardly act towards a defenceless animal.”
Detective Sergeant Dolan believes young people are likely responsible.
“It's a bit of a wild rampage,” he said.
“I've spoken to the principal and he's confident they will be able to shield the children from it.”
