Sometimes children might need to live away from their natural parents for a while. If this time ever comes, it is the army of foster carers across our state and country who take them in and provide them with the care they deserve.
According to Fostering NSW, children and young people need out-of-home care for all sorts of reasons:
- abuse and/or neglect;
- parental illness including mental illness;
- lack of family supports;
- disability or family crisis.
Whatever the reason, these children all need safe and caring environments for however long it takes to determine the best placement for them. These safe and caring environments are provided by foster carers for either an immediate, interim, or long-term period of time.

It is during Foster Care Week, September 11-17, that we acknowledge the commitment of these carers and the essential role they play.
Foster Care Week encompasses a range of activities that are carried out throughout NSW.
The aim is to thank foster carers for their invaluable contribution, to show appreciation for all the work they do and raise awareness about the need to recruit more foster carers.
The Association of Children’s Welfare Agencies has co-ordinated and supported Foster Care Week activities across NSW since its inception in 1990.
The week commences with a Picnic Day, held in Sydney, followed by events at regional locations. It’s a chance to offer your support for those who foster, and perhaps find out if it’s something you’d like to be part of.
Foster carers come from all walks of life, but they must be ready and willing to show a commitment to the wellbeing and needs of children and be able to provide a stable environment in order for them to feel comfortable. As well as patience, energy and being culturally sensitive, carers must also be able to say goodbye for when the time comes for the child to be reunited with their family.
Foster care provides a secure and safe home for children who can’t live at home with their parents or family. Let’s make sure that it’s a service that is always available to those who need it.
