Though Maher is unsure whether he’ll play on, he would never forget their second undefeated season.

“It’s still a bit surreal at the moment,” he said.

“You ask the players to take a lot of time out of their lives for days like Sunday, but it’s a lifelong memory for the guys involved.

“To replicate our 2009 season and finish 20-0 is incredible.” 

Maher has co-coached the Tigers since 2012, alongside Danny Stevens, Chris Hyde and Shaun Daly, for an impressive total of five grand finals and three premiership victories.

“There were a few mixed emotions [on Sunday] to be honest,” Maher said.

“Even running onto the ground knowing that this would be the last time you’d be involved as a senior coach, it was a lot to get my head around, coming to terms with it all.

“But I’m pleased to see guys Ben Dower achieve senior success, Daniel Cross come back to his home club and win a flag.”

After finishing his stint as one of Albury’s longest serving coaches, Maher has remained involved in the search for his replacement.

Maher said Joel Mackie was a strong candidate for the job after working his way through the ranks.

“Joel has been involved in the coaching structures here for a number of years now,” he said.

“It’s been a progression for Joel, he’s taken on more responsibility this year.

“He knows the areas he needs to improve on.

“But he’s got really great knowledge of the game, I think he’ll be a good candidate for the job.”
