Link-up defender Horacio Ingles was the first recipient of the newly re-titled honour.
Thompson himself attended the club's presentation night last weekend, and club president Harry Wilhelm said he had been a hit.
“We thought it was only appropriate (to name the medal) for Archie,” he said.
“His family are still involved with the club, it was great to have him here for the presentation night.
“He spoke to everyone for about 30 to 40 minutes, covering things like his experiences growing up here, some of his memories from his A-League days.
“There were a lot of photos taken, I can tell you that.”
Thompson called time on his glittering A-League career earlier this year, after 224 games and 94 goals for Melbourne Victory and 54 for the Socceroos.
He is currently signed to Melbourne-based NPL side Heidelberg.
