Wangaratta Detective Senior Constable Jason Bray said police were called to a MacKay Street home Tuesday morning.
“Around 9.30am, a 47-year-old female at her home address was allegedly stabbed in the throat region,” he said.
“The victim called in through triple-O asking for assistance and the suspect fled the scene.
“Police attended and the victim’s been conveyed to hospital by ambulance.
“Her condition doesn’t appear to be life-threatening at this stage.”
Detective Senior Constable Bray said the suspect, also from Wangaratta, was arrested after fleeing the scene.
“The suspect, a 36-year-old female, was arrested on Greta Road,” he said.
“She’s in custody and will be undergoing a psychiatric assessment to see if she’s fit for interview.”
Detective Senior Constable Bray said the 47-year-old victim received a puncture-wound to the throat.
“We located a large pocket-knife, that will undergo forensic testing,” he said.
“We don’t believe it’s a knife that belonged to the MacKay Street address, but belonged to the suspect.”
Detective Senior Constable Bray confirmed the victim and suspect were known to each other, but said it was unclear at this stage what their relationship was and why the incident occurred.
“They are known parties – it’s hard to determine what’s going on, considering one female is being treated and one appears to have a psychiatric condition,” he said.
Detective Senior Constable Bray said charges had not yet been laid and urged anyone with information to contact Wangaratta Police on (03) 5723 0888.
“The likely case is she’ll be taken in for treatment and interviewed and charged at a later time,” he said.
“It happened within the house and is in a residential area, so it’s a quiet part of town.
“It was in MacKay Street, near the south side of Rowan Street, so given the suspect has fled the scene, if there’s any information we ask people come forward.”
