It’s particularly great to come back to fantastic stories of fish biting all over the place, especially in our backyard at the Lake Hume weir wall.

The potential of the wall to ever come back as a great fishery has long been a good talking point among fishos.

Due to overselling of water we just didn’t have, dry conditions and policy changes, it’s been a very long time since we’ve seen this much water come out of Hume.

Lots of people argued the wall was gone and would never fish as well as “the good old days”. But, as we’re seeing now, it was always just a matter of getting that water to come over the top to encourage everything to move up for a feed.

The best thing is it has shown a new generation what the fishing can be like out there. With solid rain predicted over the next few days, there’s every chance she’ll spill over again.

Trout are being caught in good numbers and are in great nick too. There’s also plenty of yellas – they seem to be just as keen on attacking bait as they do lures.

I know the vast majority of fishos do the right thing these days, but keep in mind that just because there’s a bag limit it doesn’t mean you have to keep everything you catch.

Dartmouth Dam - has been going great. Trolling on top, with lead line, paravanes or downriggers, it doesn’t seem to matter. 

I think I’ve only spoken to one fisho that’s missed out up there in the past week and a half, with everyone else either catching their bag of five, or close to it.

Streams – haven’t fared too well for the start of the season, with all this rain keeping them pretty high and nigh unfishable in some cases. There’s been a few nice fish picked up on worms in the backwaters of most. We need a week or so of dry weather to let them settle.

Eildon – is now open all year round to cod fishing and I’ve seen a couple of photos of good fish caught on the troll.

Lake Hume – has been producing quite a few yellas, from what I’ve been hearing. All methods seem to be working and if you haven’t got a boat, don’t despair – there’s plenty being caught from the bank on worms and yabbies.

Jindabyne/Eucumbene – have also been fishing really well, but I’m not sure I’d like to be anywhere near either this weekend with the current weather reports. A few locals have hit both lakes in recent weeks and all have done really well.
