Mellington was outed for seven weeks after he was found guilty of charging Lavington’s Will Lenehan during the 40-point win over Lavington.
The former Fremantle forward fronted the O&M tribunal last week after he was cited on video evidence.
He pleaded not guilty, arguing it was not a deliberate act.
However, the tribunal decided the amount of force was unnecessary.
He was handed a three-match ban, but also had a four-game suspended sentence invoked from a match while playing in the Goulburn Valley League in 2015.
If he is forced to sit out the seven weeks, it will be one of the O&M’s longest suspensions of recent years.
The Tigers had until 2pm on Monday to lodge an appeal, with president Stuart Hodgson confirming the club’s intention.
It will be heard by the AFL Victoria Country Appeals Board during the week starting October 17.
