NEWCASTLE: Animal Rescue president and former Liberal candidate Jaimie Abbott has called NSW Premier Mike Baird’s backdown on the greyhound racing ban “disappointing”.
Ms Abbott, an animal advocate and public relations specialist who stood for the federal seat of Newcastle, said she was speaking for Hunter Animal Rescue in a role she has held for 10 years.
WOLLONGONG: An Illawarra Liberal MP has conceded the state government’s chosen greyhound industry path “was not the correct one”, as the region’s Labor politicians celebrate a win for the community.
Parliamentary secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward has leapt to the defence of Premier Mike Baird, who declared he “got it wrong” while confirming the government’s ban backflip on Tuesday.
GUNNEDAH: Geoff Rose said today’s decision to overturn the state’s greyhound ban was “a win for commonsense”.
NEWCASTLE: Brett Lazzarini believes the NSW government has finally got it right in taking greater responsibility for regulation of the industry.
Lazzarini, Newcastle Greyhounds chairman, said there was great relief in the Hunter greyhound racing community on Tuesday after NSW Premier Mike Baird confirmed a backflip on the decision to ban the code over animal welfare concerns.
BLUE MOUNTAINS GAZETTE: It was a matter of principle for both MP Trish Doyle and Premier Mike Baird, but in the end they both backflipped after pressure from their political parties on greyhound racing.
ARMIDALE: The town’s greyhound club has applauded the NSW Government’s decision to overturn the ban on greyhound racing within the state.
MAITLAND: While the ban pleased many animal welfare advocates, people involved in the greyhound industry and their supporters have been vocal in their outrage over the decision.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald said he stood by the government’s original plan to ban racing.
BATHURST: Matt Murphy and his family are among those celebrating at the announcement.
“I feel like crying, my wife did have to go to work today, I’ll probably be a mess when she gets home,” he said.
HAWKESBURY: Greyhound trainer Bradley Barnes said he welcomed the announcement, and said he was happy to meet any demands the government placed on trainers, if it proved not all of them mistreated their animals.
“I am really happy, common sense has prevailed,” he said.
TAMWORTH: New England MP Barnaby Joyce has congratulated the NSW Premier’s decision to reverse his decision to ban greyhound racing in the state.
“[The policy change] justifies the concerns I held, which were really the concerns relayed to me by the people of New England,” Mr Joyce said.
GOULBURN: The mood was cautiously upbeat at Goulburn’s Greyhound meeting today. The 11-race program attracted the usual strong crowd but this time there was something else to talk about.
KEMPSEY: Greyhound trainer Nathan Goodwin, who often races dogs at the Hastings River Greyhound Racing Club, was thrilled with the decision.
“It’s a big relief to be given the green light to get back into action,” he said.
