The Melbourne resident, aged in his late 50s or early 60s, had been staying at a property on Brady Lane.
His camper trailer caught alight on Saturday night and he drove himself to hospital at Wangaratta.
He was then flown to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where he was still recovering on Thursday.
Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson said it was unclear what had caused the fire.
“He had been camping on a property when his camper trailer caught on fire,” he said.
“He drove into town before being flown to Melbourne.
“There are no suspicious circumstances.”
The man had been camping by himself.
“There are no indications what has caused the fire,” Detective Leading Senior Constable Thompson said.
“He received burns to 40 per cent of his body.
“He is still recovering in hospital.”
The incident is being investigated by general duties members at Wangaratta.
