Out of hundreds of entries, Corowa High School’s John Schnelle has made it into the top 10 of La Trobe University’s young writers’ awards for his short story.

John, 16, said Keys and Spaces reflected on the process of growing up for the theme ‘space’.

“I thought, perhaps I could write about my relations with my siblings, who are separated from me by space,” he said.

“As my five older siblings left for uni, like the old man (in the story), I'm the only one left.

“I'm thrilled to have made it this far, and wonder why I haven't entered something similar before.”

John will attend an awards presentation in Melbourne on Wednesday.
