Depth issues plagued the club at the start of last season, leading to several heavy losses before the club recovered late in the year.
Barnes said he was desperate to steer the club back into the finals after coming close in 2015.
“We had a tough start, but I thought we recovered well by the end of the season,” Barnes said.

“We feel we've got the club heading in the right direction, we want to play finals, we think we've some players who can help us do that.
“The competition is so strong at the moment, we've got to step up to the plate and keep up with the likes of Thurgoona and Kiewa.”
Boom recruit Kylin Morey has been appointed as assistant coach, while the club has bolstered its depth with the likes of Michael Voight, Ben Hall, Corey Rochow, Jesse Dale and Ben McIntyre.
“The boys can do it, the talent is there, but we absolutely have to lift our workrate,” Barnes said.
“Having that extra bit of depth should help push our local guys and young players a bit harder.”
