But Albury Local Court heard this week how this was at odds with David Ross McLachlan’s exemplary behaviour when he wasn’t on the booze.

McLachlan held down a senior role in an abattoir, where he was a well-respected, hard-working employee.

Magistrate Tony Murray said it appeared McLachlan, 44, strongly let himself down because of his ongoing issue with alcohol abuse, something acknowledged by his defence.

To that end, he noted McLachlan had alcohol-related court appearances going back to to 1990.

Mr Murray said McLachlan was “very adversely affected” by alcohol at the time of the offence.

He also said it “never ceases to amaze me” why people such as McLachlan so badly treated the people they “supposedly” loved.

McLachlan pleaded guilty to a single count of resist or hinder police in execution of their duty.

The court was told how McLachlan and his partner had been in a relationship for 13 years.

They had no children, but at the time of his arrest they were caring for her 22-month-old granddaughter.

It was just before 8pm on October 1 when police were called to their home in response to reports of an argument.

When they got there at 8.10pm, the victim was standing in the driveway holding the child as was her own daughter and child.

She told police McLachlan had drunk a lot of beer over the previous three hours “and he has become increasingly aggressive and agitated”.

Soon after McLachlan emerged from the garage and began abusing his partner, swearing at her and telling her to leave for supposedly calling the police.

He was similarly aggressive to the police, telling them: “F … off me property, you don’t have a right to be here.” His aggression to police stopped only after he was handcuffed.

Mr Murray convicted McLachlan, put him on a two-year good behaviour bond and fined him $700.
