With the AFL introducing a bye before its finals series, the league has pushed back their premiership decider by six days to cash in on the spare weekend.
The grand final will be played on September 23.
The last Ovens and Murray grand final to be played on a Saturday was between North Albury and Wangaratta Rovers in 1980.
In other news, reigning premier Albury will kick off the season against Wodonga Raiders on April 1, with Myrtleford and Yarrawonga locking horns, North Albury hosting Corowa-Rutherglen, Wodonga doing battle with Wangaratta Rovers and Lavington travelling to Norm Minns Oval to take on the Magpies under lights.
There will be two Good Friday night games, with Lavington hosting Wodonga and the Raiders making the trip to Wangaratta.
“We wanted the season to start with a bang and we think we have achieved that. There are certainly marquee games throughout the season but the first four rounds are particularly exciting,” league general manager Sean Barrett said.
“From the league’s perspective, it’s extremely important to provide a fixture that’s fair and equitable to our member clubs and I’m confident we’ve been able to achieve that.
“It’s certainly a challenging process developing the fixture, we try to satisfy as many of the club requests as we can whilst retaining the current fixture policies and guidelines we have traditionally had in place.”
