Border-based Rehabilitation Outcomes passed its B Corporation certification with flying colours this week, making it the fourth in the region.
Having started Rehabilitation Outcomes in 2002, Brad and Jane Stevens felt the conscious business model was a good fit for them.
Chief financial officer Mr Stevens said from an approved workplace rehabilitation provider, the business had branched out to deliver private services to businesses.
He said this holistic approach to keeping workers in their jobs fitted well with conscious business.
“We all know the negative consequences of worklessness for people and the community,” he said.
“We’re helping sustain people in work.
“We want to see people even before they know they have a problem, which is where our early intervention programs and risk assessment come in.
“We’ve rolled out a Happy Body at Work program designed for sedentary workplaces; it targets sitting, diet, exercise and workplace stress.”
Since 2002, Rehabilitation Outcomes has helped 3000 people return to work in Albury-Wodonga, Wagga, Wangaratta and as far as Deniliquin.
Mr Stevens said injured workers needed more than treatment to return to meaningful work.
“We understand their capacity for work and we understand their transferable skills,” he said.
“We connect the dots to help people find work; our physiotherapists and occupational therapists help people because treatment isn’t enough – they talk to supervisors and make sure it’s working.”
Mr Stevens said the business scored well in the B Corporation certification process on equal opportunity employment.
He said of the staff of 18, women held 16 of those jobs.
“We have part-time mums with flexible working arrangements,” he said.
“We have promoted from within the business rather than recruiting from outside.”
Mr Stevens said their private work would expand as they sustained workplace rehabilitation.
“We’re a high-level workplace rehabilitation provider; some people prefer operators to just tick boxes but that’s not us,” he said.
Wodonga Chamber of Commerce wants 30 B Corporations on the Border by 2030. Business Growth Strategies and Vivid Accountants and Advisers in Wodonga and Harwood Andrews in Albury are certified.
