The open garden is a fundraiser for the new Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund and that’s a cause very close to the hearts of Glandore’s owners Bradley and Kerryn Hayden.

In the full flush of its spring bloom, the garden is a daily source of joy – and comfort – to Mrs Hayden, who is fighting an aggressive breast cancer.

The keen gardener and her husband purchased Glandore nine years ago and set about creating a classic country garden filled with delightful nooks and crannies.

As with any garden, it’s been a work in progress but visitors will be able to enjoy the delights of a Manchurian pear walkway, rose garden archways, lovingly tended vegetable garden and perhaps even take a peek into the new “potting shed”.

There is a huge golden elm that takes pride of place in the garden, planted by former owners Norma and John McBrien more than 40 years ago.

For Mrs Hayden, the garden has been her sanctuary – and her focus – during the past four months of treatment.

Some of that treatment has been in the bright and airy environment of the new cancer centre.

Jane Evans, fundraising manager for the cancer centre trust fund, said it’s grassroots events like the Haydens’ open garden that helped make a big difference to the lives of cancer patients.

“The trust fund is a 100 per cent local charity with all money raised staying in our community,” she said.

Having access to a medical facility of this calibre so close by has made the cancer journey just that little bit easier for the Haydens.

For Kerryn it’s meant more time to recover in the tranquil surrounds of home.

And while she’s meant to be resting, well there’s been plenty of pruning, planting, tidying and trimming ahead of the gates being opened in welcome on Saturday.
